Named for the awe-inspiring woman behind Twich Women’s Sewing Collective, the Abuk Pouch is handcrafted using recycled coffee bags donated by Melbourne’s premier coffee spot, Top Paddock. Available in small and large sizes and accented with a thick webbing stripe and a cute zip-attached tassel, this handy little pouch will comfortably house your cards, coins, lip balm, all those crumpled receipts and random ephemera we ladies love to accumulate.
Abuk Bol epitomises strength, courage and resilience. In 1991 at age 14, Abuk was kidnapped in Sudan and released a year later not knowing where she was. She survived for three years in a camp before being rescued by her uncle. Unable to reunite with her parents due to raging war, and after several more years living as refugee in Egypt, Abuk settled in Melbourne in 2004. Through Twich Women’s Sewing Collective, Abuk – a mother of six (soon to be seven) – has fostered a safe, warm and welcoming environment for South Sudanese women to make clothes, crafts, and do alterations. In addition to this hands-on creating, the collective provides accredited training in sewing skills.
Global Sisters takes great pleasure in assisting Twich Women’s Sewing Collective with educational programs and connecting its members with opportunities to sell and promote their beautifully handmade crafts.
