Here is what we are doing about it:
2.73 Million Australians are currently unemployed or underemployed. At the same time, there are 243,500 job vacancies and we know that women have been hardest hit by the pandemic.
For every 1 job available there are 11 job seekers!
So what does that mean? It means that we urgently need to create new jobs, and invest more into the most under-valued but powerhouse of the economy- women’s micro business. We need to do this now, so that women and their families are not living in poverty, and so we can prevent long-term economic insecurity that is leading to a next generation of poverty, women retiring with little to no super and assets, and the concerning trend of older women’s homelessness.
As a society, we can and have to do better.
The budget did not step up to this challenge or recognise that Australian women have been disproportionately affected by COVID. The so-called “women’s budget” rightly focuses on childcare and violence but falls severely short of providing women with the opportunities to be economically secure, now and into the future. By largely ignoring women’s economic security, women who are trapped in violence cannot leave.
At Global Sisters, we know that the solution will not, and cannot, come exclusively from the Government. Corporate Australia, Philanthropy and Civil Society all play a vital role in making business possible and backing her brilliance.
Global Sisters is doing something about this right now. We offer Australian women an opportunity to create their own income stream and become self-employed using expert business support, networks, microfinance and an online sales presence. Your investment of $1000 creates 1 job for a Sister as she works through our completely SUBSIDISED programs to create her own job. This investment enables Global Sisters to provide a Roadmap of business ideation, launch and startup support to women across Australia, whether they be in remote, regional or urban areas.
We make business possible for women who are unemployed, underemployed and lacking decent, flexible jobs that take into account their carer responsibilities and other systemic, structural barriers to economic participation. We strategically focus on older women and single mothers as two cohorts that are often invisible and ignored, and where we have the greatest impact. We support women to turn fledgling businesses into viable self-employment.
We invite you personally or corporately to join us in creating the jobs we need to recover from COVID and make our society a fairer and more inclusive place for women.
Investing in Global Sisters has a tangible economic impact. $1000 creates 1 job for an Australian woman(donations are tax deductible).
