Gemma Carr Photography helps Global Sisters’ businesswomen share their stories.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and when it comes to starting out in business – especially in this age of digital media and limited attention spans – you can’t overstate the importance of good quality images to promote your products and services. There are so many things to think about when starting up a new business, that finding the time and inspiration – let alone the funds – to organise professional photography can be a real obstacle.

Luckily, for the business women working with Global Sisters – like Yoko Nakazawa of Cooking with Koji and Pamela Mujica of PAM Designed – this is one less thing they have to worry about.
That’s because Yoko and Pamela have been able to work with professional photographer Gemma Carr, who offers pro-bono creative services to Global Sisters through her business, Gemma Carr Photography.
“In 2019, I was hired to photograph the Global Sister Pitch Event in Melbourne, and was really impressed by the whole initiative,” said Gemma.
“I loved the concept of helping women to take authority over their lives in a supported environment.
“As a small business owner myself, I know the benefits first hand of being self-employed and how these can shape your life positively. Small business owners can gain so much independence and confidence doing something we love.

“Global Sisters is helping make this possible for women, who can use their skills to turn their lives around. I wanted to be a part of that!,” she said.
Gemma also said her work with Global Sisters helps her to live out her values through her business.
“One of my core values is making an impact and helping others. I believe in women, and want to see us all flourish. To do so we need support and sustainable business practices that will continue to help us grow.
“I think the chance to help others to live fruitful, rewarding lives should be taken by all of us, all the time.
“To me this project was very much a partnership where I was able to highlight the, quite frankly, outstanding skills that Yoko and Pamela have.
“It has been wonderful to be able to use my skills as a photographer to help Yoko and Pamela promote and build their businesses,” said Gemma

Yoko Nakazawa said after meeting Gemma for the first time, she was immediately excited about the possibilities.
“Because of the COVID-19 lockdown in Melbourne, I wasn’t able to be there for the photoshoot,” she said.
“But after speaking with Gemma about my products, I was confident she understood me and my business, and would be able to represent my work through her photography.
“She worked very quickly! When she uploaded some of the first photos to Instagram, it was like magic!,
“She used angles I would never have thought of, and I really liked the feeling of the photos telling my story. It was a fresh perspective for me, and very different to what I had tried to do on my own previously.
“I loved her work! Under this pandemic, things are moving more online, therefore photographs have more power. I feel so lucky that I can use these photos now for my business,” said Yoko.

Pamela Mujica was also thrilled to be working with Gemma, and said the timing couldn’t have been better.
“Gemma is a great photographer; she has such an eye for detail and patience, to have taken photos of each and every item of jewellery I sent to her. Her creativity and imagination are amazing,” she said.
“During these difficult times, of COVID-19, it has been hard for any small businesses. It’s like we are living in a bubble without many opportunities where we can sell our products, but I also have found time to think about plans of how I can improve my business.
“So you can imagine what a great and welcome surprise it was, to have Global Sisters step up to help me, not only with these professional photos, but also with new opportunities where I can sell my products.
“I know very well that a great photo makes a big difference when I need to make an impression and sell my jewellery. I am very grateful for this opportunity,” said Pamela.
