Back Her Brilliance

Global Sisters Annual Report 2023

Our Vision

We believe in a world where every woman has the opportunity to create her own economic future.

Our Mission

Make business possible for women by helping them overcome barriers so they can create and grow their own business and achieve financial independence.

Our Sisters

Our Sisters come from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, often with intersectional disadvantage, and always with economic disadvantage or exclusion.

Global Sisters’ strategic focus is supporting solo mums and older women, women in regional/remote areas and those suffering domestic and family violence– because these factors exacerbate the negative impacts of economic inequality.

We have supported over

Our Programs

In 2022-23 we continued to extend national reach via our hybrid online/in-person model. By combining accessible digital platforms (Facebook, Sister Portal, Zoom) with genuine human connection, we were able to reach an additional 431 new women and support a total of over 1030 women.

Whilst the model itself stayed the same, we evolved the content and form of delivery, making it even more flexible, recognising different learning styles and making that central to our programming. From considering how to create programs for neurodiverse women, to making participant engagement requirements more relaxed, we set about removing more barriers this year, than ever before.

Business Education

In 2022-23 Global Sisters supported women in their business journeys via:

My Big Idea Workshop

A guided approach for online groups aimed at experiential style learners.

Sister School

Based on feedback and testing, we piloted and embedded a 4 weekly learning program, allowing completion within one month while allowing increased time for processing learning and actioning in their business.

Coaching Circles

Adapted from two-three topics per quarter over seven weeks to one topic per month (1 hour per week x 4 weeks), allowing a deeper dive with an expert and group Sisters on similar learning trajectories

Financial Pathways Program

Based on action research with Sisters, Global Sisters designed the Financial Pathways program, a new addition to the Global Sisters suite of offerings. This two-module program supports Sisters to  build their business financial roadmap. Throughout the program Sisters familiarise themselves with key business financial terminology, essential financial reports and statements, taking a deeper dive to unpack how their business makes and spends money to create value. Case studies are used to empower Sisters to have confidence in their capacity to build and read key financial data that will give them visibility on their business performance and empower them to make more insightful business decisions. Lastly, the program supports Sisters to take a hard look at their cash flow, how to identify current or looming issues, and the role of a cash forecast in anticipating when you will need additional capital or financing.

Pro Bono Business Coaching & Services

Global Sisters pro bono coaching and services is responsible for connecting experts from companies with Sisters. Our corporate partners are organisations who help deliver crucial business education and coaching to Sisters. It is mutually beneficial with companies being able to offer meaningful, high impact 1:1 volunteer opportunities to their staff and meet their ESG/ DEI goals.

180 volunteers

“I think the organisation is doing great things for this community and I’m so honoured to be able to give back to a woman with an idea to make her life better. I think the community is really helpful to coaches and Sisters and I’m so happy to see Sisters kicking goals!”

Taryn Campbell (AMP)

“Great program that is well paced and supported. I appreciate the foundations that the Sisters go through prior to introducing them to their Coach.”

Systems Change

Global Sisters has progressed our systems change agenda to tackle the macro structural and systemic barriers to women’s economic participation and security.
There are 4 pillars of our systems change strategy:

Welfare Reform Self Employment

There are intractable blockages to women on welfare who want to be self-employed. A combination of mutual obligations, business income reporting and “baked-in” disincentives with employment service providers make the pursuit of business virtually impossible. We have set out to create an evidence base of the welfare reforms and conditions needed for women on welfare to successfully establish a viable business. At the beginning of 2023 we commenced the first of three demonstration projects with a subset of women on welfare, those with disabilities. This will be followed by another two subsets of women on welfare- solo mums on Parenting Payment Single and women escaping violence on Jobseeker.

Financial Pathways

Global Sisters progressed cohort research on financial needs with a sector wide forum in May 2023: 2023 Financial Service Provider Forum – Fixing Finance for Women in Micro Business. The forum refined our collective understanding of the gaps in products and services available and accessible for women in micro business. This led to the beginning of new partnerships with financial service providers to co-design and offer affordable, appropropriate products. The first financial product partnership is with Imalia Insurance, providing access to critical business insurance for Sisters. Additionally Global Sisters designed a new program offering called Financial Pathways, to support Sisters to develop their business financials and determine their business funding requirements.

Elevating Micro Business

This initiative is now called “Pro Women Micro Business Policy and Investment” and seeks to address the invisibility of women’s micro business due to an inadequate national definition, data and activity index. By  elevating women’s micro business as a significant part of the SME sector and contributor to employment and economic growth through definition, data and activity indices, Global Sisters believes that we can influence policy and investment to support the growth of women’s micro business. Global Sisters has been working closely with the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) to appropriately and accurately redefine women’s micro business.

Permanent affordable housing

Through our impact roadmap, we know that a secure housing asset is the most effective way to sure up women’s economic security. We spent this year researching and designing our systems change pilot for affordable, permanent housing for women.

News & Highlights

Award Winner

SIMNA 2022 Awards in Social Impact Management

Global Sisters was named the winner of the 2022 SIMNA Award for Innovation in Social Impact Measurement, ahead of a stellar line up of outstanding change-markers. The award focuses on the important work being done to measure and provide evidence of the social change being achieved through Global Sisters’ world-first programs.

“Being able to accurately measure, report upon and demonstrate the actual social impact and change we’re achieving is absolutely crucial. We need to be able to show that we’re making a real and tangible difference to people’s lives, and show that our programs are working. We consider it essential to our credibility and sustainability as an organisation – and for that we are honoured to be recognised for our work”.

Mandy Richards, Global Sisters CEO & Founder

AMP and Global Sisters join hands for positive change

Global Sisters was awarded the AMP Foundation’s 30th Anniversary grant of $1 Million – available to not-for-profits delivering positive change.

The AMP Foundation’s partnership with Global Sisters started in 2016. By enabling Global Sisters to create a scalable model, more women can now generate an income and improve their long-term economic security.

Mandy says

“With this generous support, we will make a profound difference to 300 single mothers and their children – by providing a pathway to financial independence through self-employment. Our goal is that self-employment becomes a genuine alternative to welfare dependence or low paid, unstable work for women all over Australia”.

Global Sisters convenes the first Australian Finance Forum looking exclusively at ‘Fixing Finance for Women in Micro business’.

In May 2023, The Financial Service Providers Forum brought together 59 Financial Sector Service Providers including 79 participants. Global Sisters was able to spotlight the lived experiences of female founders and women-led micro business.

The line up of speakers provided synthesis of ecosystem challenges, financial product innovation and testing insights for business related insurance, financing and credit, superannuation and financial planning. Each called to action Australia’s largest banking and financial institutions, asking them to solve access barriers, gender bias and exclusion of women from micro-business while accelerating sector growth.

Funded under the ECSTRA Foundation*, the Global Sisters Women’s Economic Security Pathways Program has launched a new Insurance Platform 12-month pilot, and is in discussions for two financing initiatives that would complement the existing Microfinance options (NIL and Low Interest lending) we currently extend to active members.

Inclusive Programs

Disability Demonstration project supported by GOOGLE

In partnership with Google.org, we launched a demonstration project with women with disabilities. The Inclusive Programs aims to make business a genuine possibility for women with disabilities, particularly gender-specific and hidden disabilities, who face significant barriers in employment and financial independence.

Inclusion is at the heart of Global Sisters and through the project we have been working hard to make our programs and support accessible for women with a range of disabilities. A large number of women in the Inclusive Programs are neurodiverse and we began to shine a light on neurodiversity in business through the most popular panel of the year – watch some of the highlights here:

Financials

The 2022/23 financial year has seen Global Sisters continue to grow and strengthen our relationships with corporate, philanthropic and government partners. 2022/23 was the first year of a 4 year funding agreement under the Federal Government’s Women’s Leadership and Development Program. This project focuses on women who experience intersectional barriers to economic participation and supports them on a pathway to self employment. This financial year, we also received a grant from Google.org to fund a 3 year demonstration project to support women living with a disability start their own micro-business. In addition to these new multi-year funding agreements as well as others that are currently in place, we continue to receive ongoing support from both new and long-term partners, all committed to accelerating women’s economic security.

Financial report 2023

The majority of our expenditure has once again been incurred on programs directly supporting our Sisters as well as our Systems Change interventions which are aimed at sustaining and leveraging business income to change women’s long-term economic security. We are committed to keeping our infrastructure costs as low as possible and we thank our partners who provide services at pro bono or discounted rates for helping us to achieve this objective.
